The seasons come and go affecting our body’s physically and emotionally state as nature brings these environmental changes to our attention. Sometimes gentle or dramatic, these adjustments can take a toll and affect our emotional wellbeing.
In the fall, we leave behind the relaxed and expansive attitudes of summer and adapt to the more serious, and introspective energies of fall. Chinese medicine offers another perspective. It defines the seasons by one of the five elements of wind, fire, metal and wood and earth and aligns it with an organ of the body that needs attention. Fall represents metal, the lungs and the large intestine. Metal treats the external for personal organization, setting limits and protecting boundaries.
The energy of the lungs is “yin” letting go” beginning new projects that focus on internal growth. Its partner, the large intestine is “yang”. They work together to keep balance in the body. The lung is responsible for taking in the new, breathing in the crisp fall air that fills us with oxygen to think clearly, and our bodies to function optimally. The large intestine is responsible for letting go of waste the last stage of digestion that takes everything the body doesn’t need, and releases it keeping what is vital and important to nourish and function.
Fall is a good time to prepare yourself for the coming winter and take notice of your environment to support your internal health for better self-care.
Supporting self-care is one of the keys in overall wellbeing. Another aspect to support wellbeing is mind-body balance which can be supported through the process of Art Therapy, which is a blend of psychotherapy and the creative process.
Art therapy uses the power of images and creation to instill deeper change within. In the process of creation, space is given for reflection, introspection, and releasing what is ready to be let go of in the mind and body. In the upcoming day retreat we will be exploring tuning into what is ready to be released from the body, what we need to resource in the coming time to nourish ourselves, and to take the next step in the evolution of our wellbeing journey.
