What We See – Image, Emotion and Relationships in Business

If we don’t engage our senses, there is no connection.

The marketplace is crowded. When we are looking for a service or product, there are many choices available. When searching online, what we see on a website or on social media gives us our first impression.

While what we initially see might get our attention, we need an emotional connection to the content before we are interested in building a relationship.

When you look at someone you care for, and you look into their eyes, what do you see? You don’t just see their eyes, but you feel the love you have for that person, right?

If we can see what someone looks like within a two second first impression we will determine if we want to learn more about them.

Telling a story is an opportunity to engage with your audience.

When it is relevant to us, a story can lead to change. It can make us want to take action by providing us with an emotional and intellectual connection.

Mr. Rogers, the children’s television host carried in his wallet a quote from a social worker that said, “frankly, there isn’t anyone you couldn’t learn to love once you’ve heard their story”.

Your online presence is your story. Therefore, what you present needs to reflect the image you want to portray and evoke the emotions that are relevant to your business. When a customer understands who you are, if there is a fit, they will want to build a relationship with you.

The photographer Paul Caponigro said, “It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing to make a portrait of who they are.”

I am going to take the liberty of amending this quote to say that it’s one thing to just put our content online, it’s another thing to let people get to know you.
