Are we born to be marketers, or do we become marketers
because of the choices we make… or is it a combination of both?
Are you new in business or feeling stuck in your current business right now? Either way, I hope that sharing a few of my experiences might provide helpful insights…
During three decades as a business owner, there have been moments that feel like luck. Like the time early in my career when a university classmate shared that her company was looking for people who could train pen and ink graphic designers to use tech tools. With the intent to show I had a sense of design and production, I polished my meager resume and selected a few printmaking samples from my fine art portfolio.
Who brings artwork to a job interview?
I had no computer skills or agency experience. Only my artwork. The person who hired me took a chance—but the luck was all mine. I received training, worked alongside expert designers, copy writers and programmers. I received first-hand experience in how an agency is run. This opportunity led to several career building steps, ultimately resulting in me launching Impagination. The person who hired me remains an important champion and mentor in my life. I’m grateful for the relationships from this early period of my career that continue today.
Is it luck or vision?
Looking back over your career, either as a recent business owner or seasoned one, be grateful for what may seem like luck. Was it luck that I was born into a family of entrepreneurs? I didn’t realize it at the time, but I do appreciate the unique lessons I was exposed to growing up.
Was it vision that led me to live in the big city of Toronto even though I didn’t know anyone? It was a stretch, but it offered untold rewards. And I found my “family”—who remain my closest friends and supporters.
Who are your best personal and professional supporters?
Was it luck or vision that led me to start my own business funded by a little severance package based on an HR assessment that labelled me as an entrepreneur? I knew I couldn’t bear months in an outplacement program surrounded by people devastated by the loss of their positions. I had accumulated incredible experience and wanted to take control of my future and my freedom. Little wonder I’ve become a Kolbe Certified Consultant, offering an assessment that uncovers one’s free and natural way of doing.
Always looking forward
Once I announced my freelance status, bingo, I was hired by my mentor for an amazing 18-month publishing project. The job allowed me to use my technology, design and training skills to contribute to an innovative technology study on the integration of data, text, voice and image. I worked with contributing authors like the legendary technology theorist, Don Tapscott.
Exposure to a global firm with people investing in the future, and investing in me, inspired me to always look forward and to invest in the people and tools that will take me there.
