In today’s crowded digital space, holding someone’s attention is no easy feat. But good design can give your business the edge it needs to stand out, connect with your ideal audience, and turn casual browsers into loyal clients.
Here are three simple but powerful ways design can help your business attract more clients.
1. Be Clear
In a world full of distractions, clarity wins.
People today are overwhelmed with information, especially online where AI-generated content and constant scrolling compete for attention. But when someone is actively looking to solve a problem, they will make time to find a solution. You want to make sure you’re there when they do.
That’s why your visuals and messaging need to be very clear.
A simple way to test this:
Go to your website and take the 5-second test. It only takes a few seconds for someone to decide if they want to stay or click away. In just a few seconds, a visitor should be able to understand:
- What you do – Can you solve their most pressing problem?
- Who it’s for – Is your service right for them?
- What to do next – Whether it’s reading more, booking a call, or filling out a form.
When you get this right, your website becomes more than an online brochure, it becomes a high-converting machine that works for you 24/7.
2. Be Consistent
Being consistent means using a cohesive visual style and tone on all your marketing materials. It builds trust and makes your business feel reliable and professional. People want to work with businesses that they trust and cohesive design can go a long way to building that trust.
It can take at least 7-10 interactions with your brand before people recognize you and engage with you. And honestly with today’s overwhelming digital landscape, it might take even more touchpoints across different channels before someone reaches out.
Members of CAWEE have even shared that it took months of seeing someone’s social posts before a potential client finally reached out. Being consistent helps keep you top of mind.
When design is cohesive across all marketing channels it’s very powerful in making people comfortable with your brand. Think of the design on your website, your social media posts, your emails and even small things like your email signature and LinkedIn cover image. Think of how many times people see those. Do they all work together to communicate your brand’s personality which ultimately will attract your ideal clients?
A great example is a fellow CAWEE member who consistently uses a signature red in her visuals – on social media, in her backdrop, even in her clothing. This bold colour choice reflects her brand’s values of passion and leadership and it’s instantly recognizable.
What you can do:
Ideally you should have a brand guide that contains not only your logo, but the colours, fonts, images and messaging that your brand uses.
If you don’t have a brand guide, even a simple one-pager cheat sheet works. Include:
- 1–2 primary brand colours and 1–2 accent colours (with their codes)
- A headline font and a body font that work well together
- Visual examples or rules for how your brand should look and feel
If you’re using Canva, you can create a Brand Kit right inside the platform. Better yet, have a designer help you set it up so you can always access consistent brand assets on the fly.
Templates are another great tool. Having a few reusable, well-designed templates will help you stay consistent and professional across all platforms. Just avoid the default Canva templates, which are used by many people. Custom templates will help you stand out, not blend in.
3. Be Memorable
Let’s do a quick test.
Which word would you remember more easily?
Dog – Cat – Horse – 153 – Goat – Hen
Chances are you picked 153—because it’s different. That’s called the isolation effect, and it’s how our brain prioritizes information. We remember what stands out.
When you apply this principle to your business, you become memorable in a sea of sameness.
Don’t be afraid to show your personality. Be unique. Be bold. Be yourself.
If you’re a lawyer who loves pink—use pink! That kind of authenticity stands out. And people remember it.
Final Thoughts
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, that’s completely normal. Design takes time, effort, and a bit of know-how. But you don’t have to do it all alone. Partnering with a designer can help you bring clarity, consistency, and memorability to your brand.
